Bring back cheese!
As pointed out to me by my ever astute mother (who is ever the concerned middle aged person when it comes to things like this) the music on the music channels these days seems to be a lot different from when we first got the music channels pumped into our home,. i.e. When we first got our Freeview box a few years back. And she's right. The lack of cheesy pop in the charts should be a huge concern to all of us. Everything about the aesthetic of pop is different nowadays. Stars at gigs not only shout out 'buy our new single!' but also their 'Box Number' so that the kids can spend £1 voting for it to be shown. A quick browse to The Hits reveals a huge jump in the number of RnB and Dancey songs to vote for than would have been found in times past, certainly in the Britpop days (if they had Music Channels then, and not just Andi Peters reviewing the singles on Live and Kicking with Emma Forbes and Trevor and Simon) and even from the early 2000s.
Every generation needs something truly memorable that in years to come that people can dance to at weddings or engagements or even 'retro nights' (if such a thing exists) and remember hearing it when they were young slips. Though of course they would not have heard it on a seven inch single,or even a tape. Conversations in years to come will probably go something like this at weddings and reunions:
"Oooh, that's the Pussycat Dolls! I remember buying that off of iTunes when I was just a wee lassie!"
The average Agnes and Betty will then laugh at said times past, remarking how much technology has changed since the early days of MP3 players and,god forbid, CDs, then head to the buffet to fill up from the several dozen plates of mini sausage rolls. In the future, music will probably be pumped into our brains through microchips or something. By Tom from Myspace.
Anyway,as stated..Wheree is the cheese these days?! Ever since the great and peerless Steps were taken outback and shot Old Yeller style, there hasn't been a remotely good replacement. S Club 7? Good, but not as cheesy. V? Could have been great, but anything other than a top 5 hit is deemed as a flop, and before you know it,you're flipping burgers with One True Voice and performing at Butlins. Nowadays, its all RnB and girl and boy bands with guitars. Guitars! God forbid! Alice Deejay released an album called Who Needs Guitars Anyway, and its all true people. Look at how much guitar bands have flopped with the record buying public recently: The Faders,Love Bites,The Noise Next Door (Frank?) ..Needd I go on?! Okay there are exceptions, McFly for example, but there has to be an exception to a ruleafter alll, and everyone only likes McFly because they look good and have nice shiny teeth. Thing is,a lot of the flops are no more pop than the supposed 'proper' guitar bands, like Fall Out Boy and Green Day! Yes,Green Day. Let's be honest, half of American Idiot could have been written by Busted. In factt,a Busted cover of Holiday would have been amazing...
And then, they get rid of Top of the Pops! Okay, anything with Fearne Cotton on it deserves to flop, but it's not the point! It's an institution formed from cheese! Sadly,it's one of those things that people will only miss when it is gone, and go teary eyed with nostalgia over it, like when Starburst were Opal Fruits. People nowadays want the past. The past is cool. Take That sold out every stadium in Britain, almost. East 17 even managed a comeback show! Says it all. People want the past back for a reason, not just because its quirky,in the way a student thinks Mr T is cool. It's not just nostalgia, its the fact that the present just really isn't all that good. So songwriters and record company folk, here is an open plea:bring back the cheese, pretend its the 90s again,do us all a favour. It's not just for now. One day, your daughters will be getting married, and what are they gonna dance to at the reception? Another song with Snoop or Pharell in it? Bluntshoe'ss and 'niggahs' on their wedding days?! I doubt they want that. You know it makes sense. They'll love you forever for making their big day that extra bit special. And for making the charts that extra bit cheesy too.
